Editorial Reviews:

The biblical story of Esther, the Jewish woman who saved her people when they faced annihilation, is told in this production featuring British actress Louise Lombard in the title role and F. Murray Abraham as Mordecai, Esther's cousin and foster father. As a girl living under Persian rule, Esther was essentially kidnapped and taken into the harem of the king, Xerxes. The king, taken by her beauty, made her his queen, and as dramatized in the film, she found herself involved in a delicate balancing act between the ruling Persians and her own Jewish people. While this is a fairly elaborate production with a solid supporting cast, it proceeds at a relaxed pace and never quite takes off dramatically. But it does provide a solid telling of Esther's story, and if considered as something of a docudrama, it's successful. The story is clearly told of how the king's chief minister, Haman, had hoped to see the Jews annihilated, but thanks to Esther's intercession the Jews were able to defend themselves and destroy their enemies (events which are celebrated at the Jewish Feast of Purim). The production does provide much of the period flavor of ancient life, and the major facets of the story and portrayals of the characters coincide with biblical accounts. --Robert J. McNamara

Product Description
Following the conquest of Babylon the King of Persia gives a banquet for his people at which he requests the presence of his wife Vashti. As she refuses the King's demand Ahasuerus disowns Vashti and goes in search of her replacement. In his harem he meets the young girl Esther who immediately captivates him with her charm and beauty. Unaware of her Jewish heritage King Ahasuerus falls in love with Esther. Esther then reveals to Ahasuerus that she is Jewish and asks him to show her people mercy because of a planned genocide of the Jews by the King's right-hand man Haman. In doing so she saves the lives of many innocent people and paves the way for their return to Jerusalem.System Requirements: Running Time 91 MinFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: DRAMA Rating: NR UPC: 031398745525 Manufacturer No: VM7455D

3 out of 5 stars Could have been much better   September 8, 2008
Ricardo Avila
I like very much the story of Esther as found in the Bible, but I must say that in this movie many aspects could have been better. My criticism is that first the rivalry of Aman v/s Mardoqueo is not stressed enough, I think the director could have made more scenes on which to show the tension between Aman and Mardoqueo produced by the denial of Mardoqueo to bow before Aman, also they could have shown more anger in the character of Aman due to this situation, the movie shows an Aman that seems to care very few about Mardoqueo's behaviour which contradicts the story as told in the Bible. Second, the king Asuero is represented almost as a foolish youngster which I don't think was the real case and third and most important at the apex of the whole story, that is, when Esther finds out about the royal decree of extermination of the jewish people, she isn't shown weeping hard enough and putting on the top of her head rubbish but most important when she decides to go into the presence of the king she doesn't go with her woman assistant and she doesn't faint away like is told in the Bible. This omission is very bad because as told in the Bible it is at this precise moment that God changes king Asuero's heart from anger to tenderness for Esther, this pasage is completely omitte Also the king is not shown full of power, glory and (initial) profound anger at this moment. Also when Aman takes Mardoqueo to go on a ride in the royal horse, he doesn't shout "This is what you do with the man the king wants to honor" and this stage of the story last nothing at all in the movie. In short, this is a film that could have been much better and I guess we still will have to wait for a better movie to be done for this lovely story.

5 out of 5 stars Best ESTHER movie - according to the Scriptures   March 31, 2008

This is a MUST SEE Esther movie. It is very scripturally accurate and well done. The only thing that could have been improved upon is the portrayal of the King. They did not show him to be as capable and strong as he probably was. Nevertheless, the acting was terrific and our family enjoys this movie very much! It's a pleasure to see a Bible movie according the the Word.

A must see! I think this movie is great. I have nothing nothing to complain about. Wish it was longer.

5 out of 5 stars simply put...BUY IT!   March 4, 2007

It helps us remember the Biblical story and the intervention of the God of Israel in His People's lives. It also helps to be reminded that satan/the evil one works to try and stop God from keeping His Covenants with His People (including those of Judah during the account of Esther), as well reminds us of the lineage of the Savior's mother [Mary] which may have been in those who experienced this story of "Purim." Satan has always tried to "thwart" Yahweh's Plans.

We RECOMMEND buying this Biblically accurate (very close) movie on Purim, from "The Bible" series films. If you buy this version, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. But getting the "One Night With The King" version is somewhat disappointing due to it's liberality with the Biblical account.

This "The Bible- Esther" film is very enjoyably accurate and rewarding! The authentic feeling of the movie props/sets, the political issues happening at the time, the differing types of Jews at that point in history, and the power of the Gentile nations are all given time in this movie. Get it! The actors do well, and you FEEL the issues at hand. A spirituality is brought forth, just as the Spirituality you pull from the Biblical account Itself.

My family loves to watch this movie over and over. We make it a point, as well, to watch it every Purim...though we enjoy it throughout the year too.

4 out of 5 stars Verry good especially compared to others   February 26, 2007

This is one of my favorite movies from the "Bible Series". They managed to give Nehemiah and Ezra some roles in the story as well. The dialog between Mordecai and Ezra is very entertaining. Somehow it always turns out that the one rebuking the other accidentally does exactly the opposite, just a few moments later.

Unfortunately nothing is perfect. There's quite some visible female flesh in some scenes, and the king could have done with a little more "royalty" in his character. But still I like the way this movie was done. Good acting and a good soundtrack.
